Corpses, Drifters, Permadeath

This article might contain spoilers. Read on at your own risk!

In EVE Online the story is not real
until players become part of it.

In a wild and totally irresponsible speculative sweep let me float an idea that befell me, when I connected the above introductory statement with the latest development in the lore, claims that a “Drifters Members Corporation” has been acknowledged by CONCORD (confirmation needed!) and the past thought-play of game designers, flaunted at several occasions, that the POD (and implants) might play a central role in new game-play options. The ideas that have been mentioned concerning the latter point include fast-training accounts, which as a draw-back are vulnerable to perma-death.

So here is the speculation: Players will be able to take on the roles of Rifters. They can do this by either creating a new character or by somehow letting an existing character “defect” to the Rifters (implants?). Rifter characters would be bound to a membership in the Rifter Members Corp. They also would be exposed to perma-death. However, to spice things up a bit, by collecting capsuleer corpses, a Rifter can build bodies for himself; not proper clones but bodies at least into which his consciousness could be transferred. This would not remove the ever pending threat of perma-death, but would lend at least temporary immortality – as long as the supply of capsuleer corpses does not run out.

I am sure lore-wise what CCP has in stock will be much more interesting. But sometimes it is funny to play with terrible gedanken-experiments like this little speculation.

Looking forward to more lore and how it will tie into the game-play,

Yours, Chira.
