The EVE Launcher and a Dynamic World

Just a quick observation: CCP is working on making the game launcher more flexible and in particular to allow for more frequent updates to be pushed to the players. See for example a recent Dev Blogs by CCP Aporia and CCP Atropos.

One feature they would like to enable is to update parts of the game while the client is already running. The example they quote is that new players could already start character creation while they’re waiting for the full client to download. It is one of those projects CCP has running to improve the infrastructure behind EVE and to enable new features in the long run.

Maybe there is more behind this story than just being able to push out bugfixes more rapidly. Maybe the talk about the new launcher is another piece in the puzzle pointing towards the plans CCP has for EVE. How does it relate to what we know about the upcoming Odyssey expansion?

There has been talk on at least two occasions, the PAXEast presentation (at 01:48) by CCP Unifex, and a recent Q&A session (at 52:12) by CCP Soundwave on making the activities of people influence the space around them. In particular, influencing the Security Status has been mentioned explicitely by CCP Unifex at the Odyssey presentation.

Wait a minute….. the borders between highsec and lowsec shifting dynamically in repsonse to player actions? AWESOME!

Now, system security status is currently a static property. It is not something that can be updated dynamically and also a change in security status in mid-game brings about all sorts of nasty game mechanics questions.   But what if a new launcher can pull an update of the static database from the server at every downtime? Possibly without the player even noticing it? Suddenly dynamic security status seems not so exotic anymore. If the update mechanism works really so smoothly that it is transparent to the players, there is nothing stopping CCP to change the map of EVE at every downtime, updating security status based on what has happened the previous day!

You might one day undock from your home station at the border of the Caldari empire only to find the War with the Gallente Federation to have arrived at your doorstep and faction militia duking it out around you!

Stay frosty! Chira.
